Uniliner Press Relocation Completed in Under 12 Months for the Houston Chronicle
The Houston Chronicle along with manroland Goss web systems Americas, recently celebrated a major milestone: the launch of a new state-of-the-art press system that strengthens its production capabilities and supports the future of print in Houston.
This achievement was made possible through the successful relocation and start-up of a large Uniliner press—decommissioned and moved from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to the Houston Chronicle. The press was relocated exactly as it was configured, allowing the team to take advantage of an accelerated project timeline while maintaining proven performance.
Joel Meyer, VP of Operations, at the Houston Chronicle, shared:
“Relocating and commissioning a press of this scale in under 12 months is a major achievement. manroland Goss was a strong partner throughout the project—from engineering support to onsite execution—and helped ensure the press performs as expected as we bring this new capability online.”
A Unique Opportunity—Delivered on an Aggressive Timeline
The Houston Chronicle identified a unique opportunity to purchase and install the press and bring it online in a remarkably short timeframe. With an existing Houston Chronicle facility that could accommodate the press footprint, the project benefited from an ideal site fit—helping support both speed and efficiency.
From signed contract to running newspapers, the project moved from concept to production in less than 12 months, a timeline that reflects both strong coordination and the right technical resources in place.
Complex Engineering, Foundation Requirements, and Execution Support
While the facility fit enabled faster progress, the press relocation and installation still required significant planning and precision execution—including a complex foundation system and extensive preparation work.
This is where manroland Goss web systems Americas delivered critical value. From delivery through execution, manroland Goss engineering resources helped ensure the press drives and performs as intended—supporting a smooth transition into start-up mode, operator training, and final commissioning.
Joel also noted:
“manroland Goss provided outstanding support throughout the relocation and startup of our new press. Their engineering expertise and onsite execution helped us move quickly and confidently from installation to producing newspapers.”
Press Capability Highlights
The Houston Chronicle’s press configuration includes a:
-
6-plate-wide press with 4 printing towers
-
Output yielding 48 straight / 96 collect (full color)
This capability supports high-volume production and efficiency, enabling more output with fewer towers compared to other press configurations.
